Hashimoto’s — deeper dive into the root-cause layers

The Root Causes of Hashimoto’s

Did you know that 90–95% of hypothyroidism is autoimmune (Hashimoto’s)? This means the immune system is mistakenly attacking thyroid tissue. While medication has its place, true healing requires looking at why this immune confusion is happening in the first place.

Hashimoto’s is rarely caused by one single factor; it is usually a combination of overlapping layers.

Common Root Cause Layers

1. Immune dysregulation

  • Triggers: Genetics, chronic stress, infections, toxins → immune confusion

  • Impact: Leads to TPO/Tg antibodies against thyroid tissue

  • Support with: vitamin D, selenium, zinc, stress reduction, immune-modulating herbs

2. Gut dysfunction

  • Triggers: Leaky gut, SIBO, candida, dysbiosis → antigens cross gut wall → immune attack

  • Testing: Test with stool analysis, SIBO breath test

  • Support with: gut-healing nutrients (glutamine, zinc carnosine), targeted antimicrobials, probiotics

3. Nutrient deficiencies

  • Common: selenium, zinc, iron, vitamin D, B12, iodine (sometimes)

  • Impact: Deficiency = poor T4→T3 conversion, increased oxidative stress

  • Action: Correct with diet + targeted supplements after testing

4. Hormonal imbalances

  • Triggers: Oestrogen dominance, PCOS, low progesterone, adrenal dysregulation

  • Impact: Cortisol imbalance suppresses thyroid conversion

  • Action: Address with blood sugar support, stress regulation, cycle support

5. Toxin exposure

  • Triggers: Fluoride, plastics, pesticides, mould, heavy metals → disrupt thyroid enzymes & hormones

  • Action: Reduce exposures (filtered water, clean products, mould testing if needed)

  • Support: Support detox pathways with protein, cruciferous veggies, antioxidants

6. Nervous system dysregulation

  • Triggers: Chronic stress/trauma → sympathetic dominance → reduced vagal tone

  • Impact: Leads to poor digestion + higher inflammation

  • Support with: meditation, vagal-stimulating practices, calming herbs (lemon balm, chamomile)

7. Dietary stress

  • Triggers: Under-eating, low-carb, fasting → cortisol spikes, low T3

  • Impact: Leads to fatigue, slowed metabolism, and hormone imbalances

  • Action: Rebuild with regular, balanced meals rich in protein & wholefood carbs

Every thyroid case is unique — it’s never just one of these. True healing = peeling back your unique root-cause layers and having a guided, personalised plan.
